The Southern Maryland Tennis Cup strives to promote increased participation in fun and competitive tennis play in the Southern Maryland area
In our continuing efforts to expand and promote competitive and fun local tennis play, the SMCTA has sponsored the creation of the Southern Maryland Tennis Cup. The SMTC framework provides a system where players can earn points for participating in local events which accumulate over the course of a year. Players with the highest cumulative point total at the end of the year in each of 5 divisions will be crowned the Cup winners.
The Spring Fling and the Breton Bay Open, two of our long standing and well known yearly tournaments, have become affiliated with the series. In addition, a new tournament, the St. Mary's College Open, has been added to the yearly calendar. In the future we hope to foster new tournaments in Southern Maryland area as well as invite any pre-existing tournaments to become a part of the SMTC Series.
The ultimate goal of the Southern Maryland Tennis Cup is to promote increased participation for all local events, without diminishing the importance of participating in, nor the achievement of winning any of the individual tournaments.
SMTC Goals
We strive to promote good sportsmanship and increase participation in local competitive tennis play by:
Providing affiliated tournaments with additional advertising and promotional opportunities
Providing player incentives in the form of yearly champion recognition, awards and prizes
Offering assistance in fostering new tournaments in the Southern Maryland area
SMTC Point System
Players earn points by participating in SMTC tournaments in any of the following divisions:
Open Men's Singles
Open Women's Singles
Open Men's Doubles
Open Women's Doubles
Open Mixed Doubles
Points are awarded as follows:
Winning a division in a tournament - 50 Points
Finalist in a division - 40 Points
Winning any match in a tournament - 20 points per win
Participation in a tournament without a win - 10 points
A player/team may only earn points from one of the above per tournament, whichever yields the highest points. For example if you win a division by winning 3 matches, you get 60 points for that tournament. If you win a division by only winning 1 or 2 matches, you would get 50 points.
Players and teams with the most points after the final tournament wins the cup. Doubles and Mixed doubles teams acquire points as a team, not individually.
